Planting in Greenwich CT

To maximize the growth, display, and life of your plants it is important to get the initial planting correct. The health and success of a plant is determined by how suitable the conditions are for that specific type. We are experts in plants and planting conditions, so we will select the right plant for each position, and the right position for each plant. We can also enrich the soil where required to ensure the right minerals and levels of acidity for the needs of each plant.

Greenwich is in a Humid Continental climate, which means it experiences warm to hot summers and cold winters. This effects the types of plants that will grow here. The last thing you want is to buy a plant that looks fantastic in summer, but then can’t take our cold snowy winters and dies in it’s first year. Likewise other plants are more winter hardy, but would struggle if left in the sun all through our summer.

As well as the overall climate, it is important to consider where you want to plant your display. Some plants thrive in a hot, dry, and sunny corner, while others prefer shady or more moist areas.

On top of this you must consider the type of soil you have- whether it is more clay-like with a tendency to water-logging in winter or cracking in summer, or more sandy, likely to dry out and usually lower in nutrients. Different plants prefer the different types of soil, which is great as it means that whatever type of soil you have we can find the right shrubs or flowers to grow there successfully. We can also work on your soil to change its composition to add nutrients or break up clay clods.

As well as the consistency of the soil, you need to consider the acidity of the soil, and the proportions of nutrients it contains. The three main nutrients found in soil are nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Calcium, magnesium and sulfur levels are also important. Various plants have different nutrient needs and different levels of acidity to thrive and grow well. We can test your soil to see it’s chemical make-up, and we can adjust it where necessary by adding nutrients.

When it comes to the actual planting, position within a bed is also important to consider. Nobody wants a beautiful flowering but short plant hidden and wasted behind taller plants that keep it in the shade. We will plan your beds to ensure there is a variety of colors and sizes of plants and that they work well to complement each other to give an overall fantastic and attractive display. We can also plan your plants to ensure you have color throughout spring and summer so that you don’t have just one short flowering period.

Finally, we understand the different needs of plants when it comes to the physical planting process. Some prefer to be buried deeply, while others prefer a shallower position.
